Photobiomodulation Therapy for Chemotherapy-Induced Peripheral Neuropathy (CIPN): Insights from the NEUROLIGHT Trial

Presented by Dr Marithé Claes

Thursday 23 July 2026
7:00 PM – 8:00 PM (Sydney Time)
Live on Zoom

Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) remains one of the most challenging and debilitating side effects experienced by people undergoing cancer treatment. Symptoms such as pain, numbness, tingling, sensory disturbances, balance impairment and reduced mobility can significantly affect function and quality of life, often resulting in chemotherapy dose reduction or premature cessation of treatment.

Join internationally recognised researcher Dr Marithé Claes as she presents the findings of the recently published NEUROLIGHT Trial, a randomised controlled study investigating the efficacy of photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) for the management of CIPN in cancer survivors.

Conducted at Jessa Hospital in Belgium, the trial evaluated sixty cancer patients experiencing CIPN and explored the impact of two PBM dosing protocols on neuropathy symptoms, mobility, pain and quality of life outcomes.

During this webinar, Dr Claes will discuss the rationale behind the study, the treatment protocols used, key clinical findings, and what these results may mean for the future role of PBMT in oncology rehabilitation and supportive cancer care.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the clinical impact of chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) on cancer survivors.
  • Review the current evidence supporting photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) for neurological and oncology-related conditions.
  • Examine the design and methodology of the NEUROLIGHT Trial.
  • Interpret the trial findings relating to neuropathy severity, mobility, pain and patient outcomes.
  • Compare the clinical effects observed using PBM fluences of 6 J/cm² and 8 J/cm².
  • Explore the potential role of PBMT as a supportive intervention for managing CIPN in clinical practice.
  • Identify future research directions and opportunities for integrating PBMT into cancer survivorship and rehabilitation programs.

Key Findings from the NEUROLIGHT Trial

✓ Significant improvement in chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy symptoms.

✓ Significant improvement in mobility as measured by the Six-Minute Walk Test.

✓ Significant reduction in pain scores following PBM treatment.

✓ Greater pain reduction observed with the 6 J/cm² treatment protocol.

✓ Findings support the potential role of PBMT in supportive cancer care and rehabilitation.
